I live in Hartford, Connecticut, and I was caught driving without auto insurance.  I was told that I will need to purchase SR-22 insurance.  How exactly does SR-22 insurance work in Connecticut?  How much auto insurance coverage do I need to purchase in order to stay legal?

If you have been convicted of driving without car insurance in Connecticut you will need to purchase SR22 insurance in order to have your driver’s license reinstated. Basically this means that you need to buy at least the minimum auto insurance coverage required by the state.  This state minimum coverage is also referred to as liability insurance.  Once you have purchased a liability auto insurance policy, the insurance company will file an SR22 form with the state letting them know that you have the required auto insurance coverage.  Once the SR-22 filing has been verified, you should be able to have your driver’s license reinstated (provided that you have
fulfilled all of the other requirements).

According to the Connecticut Insurance Department, the state minimum auto insurance coverage is as follows:

  • $20,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $40,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $10,000 property damage liability per accident

** This is just the minimum car insurance coverage required to stay legal.  Drivers are advised to carry higher coverage amounts because costs associated with a car accident can easily exceed $40,000 or more.  Also, it is important to remember that if you are financing or leasing a vehicle, you will most likely be required to carry full coverage auto insurance.

Before you purchase your SR-22 insurance policy make sure you shop around and request quotes from at least 3 different auto insurance providers. This will help ensure that you are getting the cheapest price possible.
